Oh, what a year it’s been! Wesbrook Village Year in Review 2014

2014 was a year for the record books in Wesbrook. So many galvanizing changes rolled through this neighbourhood – from new restaurants to businesses to new parks and exciting events. The Wesbrook banner is flying proud, and we couldn’t be more excited for 2015.

New neighbours
Wesbrook Village’s retail and culinary offering made a giant leap forward this year. Daily fish mongering with a fresh Pacific flavour takes on a new “scale” at Daily Catch. Hot Box Yoga brings offbeat, fun, and hugely popular yoga classes in their “Happiness Machine” (that’s the name of the studio). Meanwhile, Doughgirls bakes breathtaking breads and “down home done right” comfort food to the corner. BierCraft brings a whole universe of craft beers and French bistro fare. And Murchie’s offers a 120-year-old tradition of excellences in teas. To all of our new retailers: you complete us. We’re glad you’re here.

Number of New Retailers and Office Tenants Opened in 2014 – 7  (Daily Catch Seafood Company, BierCraft, Hot Box Yoga, Doughgirls Comfort Kitchen & Bakeshop, Murchie’s, UBC Faculty – Staff Housing and Relocation Services, UBC Properties Trust)

Number of beers on offer – BierCraft has over 120 Belgian and Craft beers.

Number of loose-leaf teas at the Wesbrook Murchie’s - 116

Momentous events
Events reflect how excited people are to engage in this community. And participation at our events continued to grow! From the warm summer sun (and bright family fun) of the Wesbrook Festival (this year we saw more than 6,500 people here!) to the traditional appeal of the Lunar New Year – from Easter, to Halloween, to all the bright glittering magic of the holidays here – this place is a destination for every season. And then there are the regular events: our outdoor movie nights (nothing like a classic under the twinkling stars) and our Running Room runs through the park (the Women’s Run and Canada Day Run are huge hits). And lunchtime concerts with Mozart School of Music definitely elevated the atmosphere. All in all, Wesbrook Village hosted more than 200 events throughout the year. Hard to beat that – but we’ll certainly try!

The medium is the message
Telling our story – locally, and globally – is important to us. This year, we launched our very first printed magazine, Wesbrook Life, to much fanfare. We also redesigned our online newsletter in a new format, better suited to digital delivery.

Built to inspire
A few additions to our streetscape cropped up this year, too. Notably, Prodigy by Adera,  The Laureates by Polygon and Nobel House from Village Gate Homes. They are currently under construction, and we can’t wait to welcome some new neighbours to our growing community!

Mundell Park gets off the ground
In 2014, we added our fifth park to Wesbrook.   Mundell Park offers some gorgeous new outdoor space, including a sweet picnic area and playground!

Partners for life
Wesbrook has plugged into the UBC community even more deeply this year, with a number of exciting new partnerships. The UNA Access Card gave residents discounts at Wesbrook Village shops and services. Our UBC Alumni partnership saw some inspiring talks from prominent leaders in BC. An outdoor art and cycling tour with the Morris & Helen Belkin Art Gallery and More Bikes pedaled around to to see the creative outdoor art on campus. And UBC Summer Nights Festival – in partnership with Campus & Community Planning – brought lots of fun well into the warm evenings. We can’t wait to see whom we’ll team up with this year!

By the numbers:
Number of New Housing Projects -  4  (Prodigy – 2 towers, Nobel House, The Laureates).
Number of visitors at DiscoverWesbrook.com – 36, 829
Number of people at the Wesbrook Festival – Over 6,500
Number of holiday lights twinkling in the season – 24,720

It’s been an incredible year.  Thank you to all of our residents, businesses, and visitors for making Wesbrook such a great community.  We can’t wait to see what 2015 holds. See you here soon!
